Midweek Walk - Ecclesall Woods

Nuthatch on branch

Wednesday, 13 December 2017

We set off from the Discovery Centre on a cold, wintry morning. Conditions underfoot were tricky, with ice and thawing snow.

Surprisingly, there was an abundance of bird life and we were soon observing a lovely pair of Bullfinch. In the space of twenty minutes, we had over a dozen species on our lists including Redwing, Nuthatch, Goldcrest and Great Spotted Woodpecker. A flock of Goldfinch feeding in Alder trees was joined by a single Siskin.

Jays were also very active and noisy, possibly stashing acorns for the winter, and we went on to see Treecreeper and Long-tailed tits before the weather deteriorated, the rain started, and we decided to make our return to the Centre. A very enjoyable December walk.
