Midweek Walk - Gillfield Woods

Midweek Walk - Gillfield Woods
Helen Ensor

Wednesday, 13 November 2019

We had a good visit to Gillfield Woods which lie a short distance from Totley, on the south-west edge of Sheffield. The walk was led by Helen Foley who is also an active member of the Friends of Gillfield Wood and so she was able to tell us about the work this group has done to conserve the area and make it accessible to local people and others.

Following the poor weather of recent weeks, we were all prepared for more of the same with wellingtons being much in evidence. But, despite muddy conditions and lots of standing water underfoot, the morning's weather was sunny, though cold.

Setting off from the end of Totley Hall Lane, we were soon spotting starlings, goldfinches and redwings in the trees.

We went on to see jay, long-tailed tit, coal tit and nuthatch, but the highlight of the walk was a prolonged encounter with a great spotted woodpecker.
