Events

We run two main series of events.
Our 'indoor meetings', usually on the 3rd Thursday of the month, run from September to May. They normally consist of an illustrated talk from a visiting speaker although we do have a social evening for the December meeting and the May event is a film show. There is a charge of £3 for group members and £4 for others (under 18s are free) which covers the entrance and refreshments.
Our 'field trips', usually on the Saturday or Sunday following the indoor meeting, are led by two of our group who are very experienced birders. We visit RPSB and other nature reserves, usually fairly local but we do go as far as Dartmoor or the edge of the New Forest on occasion. The walks are ideal for bird watchers of all levels of experience from the complete beginner to the expert. These trips are free for group members and under-18s. We charge £4 for adult non-members, which will count towards the membership fee if you decide to join the group on the day. There are sometimes parking fees or admittance charges for some reserves.

Birds and Other Wildlife of Bulgaria

A welcome return visit by David Smallshire who is an all round naturalist, tour leader and author, who has written a highly acclaimed book on dragonflies. Much of the country is farmed using traditional methods and the landscape ranges from mountains to extensive forests and remnants of steppe which occur near the Black Sea, where large lakes host hordes of wetland birds and autumn see high numbers of birds migrating along the 'Via Pontica' highway. David's illustrated talk will take you birding around these habitats, as well as illustrating some of the other wildlife that can be encountered.
