Events

Our Field Trips are open to anyone - beginners and experienced birders, new participants and regulars. Dark waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are strongly recommended. Covid-19 regulations in force at the time of any field trip will be adhered to.

Field Trips are graded: "A" generally level walking, "B" some gradients, "C" steep in places. Approximate distance is given and "WC" indicates that toilets are available at or near the start point of the trip.

Field Trip entries have details of the trip and a link to Google Maps for help in finding the meeting place.

Field Trips marked as "booking essential":

To apply for places, if you are a Local Group member, please contact Mike Crow at mec.crow@btinternet.com or phone 01722 717833 with your request and give a contact phone number.

Minibus Trips:

Fourteen places are available for Local Group members on a shared cost basis payable on completion of the trip. For the time being, we are specifying that MASKS MUST BE WORN whilst on board the minibus.

Departure is at 8am from the Britford Park and Ride site (free parking) on the A338 Downton Road. Return to Salisbury is generally by 6.15pm

If you have to cancel, please notify Mike Crow on 01722 717833 as soon as possible or, if on the morning of the trip, telephone Steve Oakes on 07851 199601 after 7am.

Own Transport Trips:-

For the time being we are not able to offer lifts.

For all Field Trips, we hope you will not object to making a small contribution towards RSPB funds. We are suggesting £2 per trip, payable on the day to the trip leader.

TALKS: We have a terrific programme of talks right through to April 2022; for the time being we expect them to be on Zoom, most likely until March 2022 at least. However, all our speakers are flexible and can either speak on Zoom or at our local venue. As soon as conditions allow and we feel the time is right, we will resume live talks. In the longer term a combination of Zoom in the winter months and live talks in autumn and spring may be the solution.

Monthly Zoom meetings are on TUESDAY evenings at 7.30 pm and you can join them from 7.10 pm. For the group to cover the cost of our Zoom charge and the speaker's fee we suggest a donation after each meeting. You can pay online: account name: RSPB South Wilts LG, sort code: 30-90-79, account number: 34020860, ref: Zoom Talk. OR you can send a cheque, payable to RSPB South Wilts LG, to our Treasurer: Marlene Ryman, Avocets, 4 West Lane, North Baddesley, Southampton SO52 9GB.

In the Steps of the Vikings - a wildlife talk with a twist by Peter Holden, on Zoom

Location: In the comfort of your own home, via Zoom!

During trips he's made from Britain's Northern Isles to Norway, Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland and Canada Peter has photographed the wildlife found on the way - but he also became fascinated by the remains of the Viking settlements in these places, their early discovery of the New World and settlement in Newfoundland. Everywhere were birds that the Vikings would have been familiar with...and yet many have their own remarkable stories such as the Phalaropes from Shetland and the Great Shearwaters off Greenland. It will be fun to hear how Peter puts these subjects together!

Land of the Somer People by Mike Read, on Zoom

Location: In the comfort of your own home, via Zoom!

Mike's talk takes us through a year on the Somerset Levels; this low-lying land is highly managed and much altered since Stone Age man first set foot there. Today the many nature reserves contribute to the success of the breeding and wintering birds. And, as well as birds, there are images of flowers, insects and mammals in a talk that will appeal to a broad range of interests.

If you haven't used Zoom before you'll need to register on their website - it's free with no obligation.
Access to the Zoom meeting is via Meeting ID: 969 461 3527 and Password: RSPB
Local Group members are emailed a reminder a day or so beforehand.
