A personal recollection by Peter Antram.

It was overcast with a forecast of heavy rain to come soon when a dozen intrepid walkers set off from the car park in Springwell Lane, Rickmansworth. Fortunately the rain held off for our morning walk and though the light was flat and grey the birds were showing well. We were lucky to see all three of the special winter wildfowl among the usual ducks, geese and rails; lots of goldeneye, two or three pairs of goosander and a smart male smew and his companion.

Our search for the hoped-for siskin was rewarded in the trees around one of the hides.

Three green woodpeckers gave us all splendid views on the fields across the canal from the footpath round the lake.

Colin was lucky to see the kingfisher darting over the river but it was too quick for the rest of us. Nice to know there's one about after the hard winter though.
