This visit was held on an overcast morning with intermittent rain showers so we were quite pleased with our sightings list shown below. The habitat is a mixture of woodland, formal park, playing fields and a small nature reserve alongside the River Gade and Grand Union Canal on the outskirts of Watford.

The goldcrest, tree creeper and nuthatch were appreciated by those joining us for the first time. It is always a particular pleasure when a walk turns up lifetime first sightings for some in the party assisted by those of us with more experience.

The green woodpeckers tantalised us with their calls during the morning but remained out of sight.

Sightings list: Little Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, Red kite, Sparrowhawk, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Stock dove, Woodpigeon, Ring-necked parakeet, Great spotted woodpecker, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song thrush, Mistle thrush, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Starling, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Total 34 species seen. Also Green Woodpecker (heard but not seen).
