Whippendell Wood Local Outing

Whippendell Wood Local Outing

Sunday, 10 March 2013

Braving the weather forecast's prediction of light showers and exceptionally low temperatures for March a few of us ventured into Whippendell Wood. The walk started on a high note as a sparrowhawk swept overhead while we were still in the car park. Most of the usual woodland species graced us with their presence with a particularly delightful small flock of nuthatches in the trees overhead at one point. Gaps in the canopy provided buzzard, gulls and red kite. Unfortunately when the light showers turned into a heavy steady downpour we took the short cut back to our vehicles. The sightings list below is from memory as the paper record succumbed to the conditions and became unusable; still not bad for a wet Sunday morning in the woods.

Seen: Pheasant, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Black-headed Gull, Collared Dove, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Magpie, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, House Sparrow, Chaffinch.

Heard: Chiffchaff

Total: 20 species.
