Trip to Bowers Marsh and Rainham Marshes

Saturday, 16 April 2016

8 People started at from the carpark which was full of song with singing Warblers all around the carpark with a beautiful singing Male Whitethroat the highlight. We walked down to the main lagoon where we had the sight of hundreds of hirundinidaes mainly swallows and house martins but a few Sand Martins as well. Out on the main lagoon there were quite a few winter ducks with teal, wigeon, pochard, shoveler and tufted ducks around with a few waders around the shore with avocet, oystercatchers, redshank, curlew and a lone greenshank feeding on the spit in between the big numbers of gulls from the nearby tip. One of the highlights of the day was while walking through a nice scrubby area we had great views of corn bunting, yellowhammer and skylarks singing while a stonechat was seen and a great view of a Marsh harrier comign over our heads whilebeen mobbed by crows while a Peregrine was seen sitting on a pylon giving some nice views.

We then headed to Rainham Marshes where we had lunch overlooking the river thames with Common and a Few Artic Terns going up and down the while a whimbrel was seen passing through. We then walked up the sea wall where we had good views of feeding redshank and Shelduck on the mud with singing whitethroat and reed bunting in the hedges. We then walked through the main reserve where we had lots of singing sedge and cetti's warblers in the reeds and singing skylarks over the grassland. On the scrape we had a lone pintail in between the flocks of teal, pochard and shoveler while a snipe was found hiding on the waters edge while flocks of Swallows and Martins were coming in to feed on the insects. As we walked backed to the carpark we manged to end with a with a nice pair of yellow wagtails feeding with a group of pied wagtails.
