Field Trip to Dungeness RSPB Reserve

Location: Meet at the reserve car park

A guided walk on level shingle, visiting a number of hides overlooking the gravel pits on the RSPB's oldest reserve. The HQ by the car park has a shop, and refreshments and toilets are available. Enjoy a chat with one of the helpful staff and find out what's about. Don't forget to bring your membership card with you.

At this time of year expect western yellow wagtails, northern wheatears, European stonechats or whinchat and warblers in the scrub. With recently arrived terns, hopefully starting to nest, on the newly constructed islands. There may be one of the scarcer grebes in full breeding plumage and waders should be passing through on their way to the breeding grounds in the north.

A guided walk to our local inland wetland, a freshwater marsh with reedbeds and Alder wood; it should be rattling with the songs of newly arrived warblers. Expect sedge and Eurasian reed warblers, blackcaps and garden warblers, chiffchaff and willow warblers with the possibility of something rarer such as grasshopper warbler. Common nightingale and spotted flycatchers are possible. It is likely that a Eurasian bittern may be booming or flying over the reedbeds and several hobby are to be expected.

Birding at the Parc du Marquenterre by Alexander Hiley.

Alexander will be speaking about this wetland on the Baie de Somme in France. This site has been visited several times by members, both by private car and on the Group's organised coach trips. Always an eagerly awaited outing where we hope to see a variety of herons and egrets, breeding white storks, waders and warblers that we don't easily see in the UK. There is always the change of golden orioles, short-toed treecreeper, European serin and European crested tit. Do come along and find out more about this reserve, created on reclaimed agricultural land. We hope it will encourage you to visit with us in the future.

Evening Field Trip to Kings wood for Nightjars.

Do join us for our annual visit to a heath and woodland site near Molash. Here members have the chance of seeing several species that do not breed on Thanet. Before dusk, there is the chance of seeing and hearing tree pipits. As it darkens, the Eurasian nightjars will begin to churr in their inimitable fashion and they shortly take to the air to display or hunt moths and other night flying insects. The nocturnally active woodcock rodes above the woodland as the males search out lonely females.

An Afternoon Field Trip to Oare Marshes KWT Reserve

Location: Meet at bottom car park at the end of Church Road, Oare.
Postcode: ME13 0QD (Google map)

The Reserve is compact and walking is on the level, there is a 1km circular walk around the wetland called the East Flood. Here you will overlook reedbeds, lagoon, muddy margins and dykes. Part of the walk takes you along the sea wall of the Swale and another alongside the Oare Creek. Expect to see waterfowl, waders, warblers and bearded reedling. Marsh frogs and a variety of butterflies - sometimes the uncommon migrant Clouded Yellow can be seen. A variety of dragonflies are inevitable in the sunshine. This is a good place to locate the scarce bumblebees B. ruderatus & B. muscorum. Look out for the gaudy emperor moth caterpillars crossing the paths.

A full day visit to one of the best RSPB Reserves in our region. The reserve is on the world famous gravel foreland, a Grade 1 Site of Special Scientific Interest. Autumn migrants will feature during this visit; expect waders such as common greenshank, little stint or even pectoral sandpiper - an American vagrant, seen by members in Sept. 2017 when curlew sandpiper and ruff were also present. A visit to the power station outflow, known as the patch, might produce a passing skua, scoters, a rare gull or uncommon tern species!

A walk along Thanet's north coast searching for late autumn migrants and those that may overwinter. In past years we have seen Eurasian rock pipits, black redstarts, Lapland longspurs, horned larks, short-eared owls and snow buntings. A visit to the hide at Foreness Point may produce loons, grebes, common eider and common or velvet scoter, common murre and razorbill are often seen. Anything may turn up!

Field Trip to Walpole & Palm Bay

A guided walk along the north Thanet coast where we will be looking for winter sea-duck and waders - specialities could include purple sandpipers whose numbers have declined in recent years due to irresponsible dog walking and other disturbance pressures. Thanet used to be a hot spot for this species in the South-East. We will keep our eyes peeled for coastal chats, including the black redstart; as well as rock pipits and snow buntings. Divers, grebes, northern gannets and the auk species - common murre, razorbill or little auk may be seen and white-winged gulls such as glaucous and Iceland gull are possible.
