Two day Field Trip to Slimbridge WWT - Day 1

Our first stop was the Lee Valley Country Park where we saw a variety of birds in bright sunshine, including an over-wintering common chiffchaff, goldcrests and a variety of tits with Eurasian treecreeper and Eurasian siskin, all showing well. Unfortunately, no Eurasian bittern was present this year.

At Stockenchurch, in the Chilterns we stopped for refreshments, having already seen twenty-plus red kites from the coach. As we emerged from the restaurant, scraps were discarded in the car park and thirty-plus red kites approached to feed, giving wonderful close views of their, tail-twisting, aerobatic abilities.

We travelled on to a Travel Lodge, closer to Slimbridge WWT, and had a fulfilling carvery dinner in a nearby public house.
