30th and 31st January! Spend an hour counting the birds in your garden.

House sparrow was top of the list last year but blackbird was the most widely spotted bird being seen in more than 90 per cent of gardens in 2015.

All the details you need are on the RSPB website, and there is even an app you can use to log your results as you go.

Long-eared Owl

Long-eared Owl

A trip to Dungeness would be a good way to enhance your 2016 bird list. The long-eared owl is still there and showing very well. There are also good views to be had of firecrest and some are even getting views of the penduline tit.

We have two field trips arranged there: one on Saturday 23rd January and one on Wednesday 27th January. Do come along.

Other birds seen at Dungeness in the past week include:
Egyptian goose
Smew
Pintail
Goldeneye
Goosander
Slavonian grebe
Shag
Great white egret
Bittern
Peregrine
Merlin
Water rail
