Field Trip to Reculver and Grove Ferry

Field Trip to Reculver and Grove Ferry
Maureen Heywood

Wednesday, 23 October 2013

A surprisingly warm October day with temperatures reaching about 20 degrees but with strong south-westerly winds. Fourteen members had an invigorating walk at Reculver seeing common waders, gulls and Brent geese. The highlight for many was an unexpected black redstart. After a picnic lunch the group agreed to change plans and head inland for Grove Ferry. It was warmer and less windy and we enjoyed watching the ducks, especially pintail, and later had stunning views of male and female marsh harriers. At one point we were looking eye to eye with a young grey heron which had landed in front of the hide.
