Outdoor Meeting- Walton Nature Reserve

Location: Walton Nature Reserve

We will have a walk around one of our lesser known local reserves. The site is a legacy of the mining industry but nature is now the dominant force. The habitat is a mixture of woodland, grassland and lakes and it will be interesting to see what we can find. We expect to see woodland birds and a variety of wildfowl. Meet at the nature reserve car park on Shay Lane, Walton at 09 00

Indoor Meeting. Wild China by Tim Melling

Tim Melling from the RSPB Regional Office will be describing the wildlife highlights of a recent trip through the mountains of China's Sichuan province, home to red pandas, tibetan foxes, pallas's cats and an exciting variety of Asiatic birds. The spectacular scenery and diverse habitats of this fascinating area of China contain a rare mix of temperate and sub-tropical species so we are guaranteed plenty of colourful wildlife all introduced by Tim with his usual knowledge and enthusiasm- certainly an evening not to be missed!

Outdoor Meeting- Tophill Low Nature Reserve

There should be plenty of wintering wildfowl to see on the reservoirs and ponds of this Yorkshire Water flagship reserve. The new visitor centre is well worth a visit with its excellent views over one of the reservoirs. The centre is even equipped with its own log burning fire. This is a car visit so members should travel by their own transport. Meet at the reserve car park at 10 00 am.

We welcome a new speaker to the group, Paul Cowley who is the volunteer coordinator for the RSPB at both the Old Moor reserve and the new centre at Sherwood Forest. Paul will be bringing us up to date with the latest news from Old Moor and outlining the RSPBs plans for the exciting new venture at the Sherwood Forest- the RSPB is taking the lead as the new guardian here working in partnership with various national and local bodies in helping to preserve and develop this iconic site for many years to come.

One of the RSPB's newest reserves, we look forward to our walk around the iconic forest, home of the Major Oak. Woodpeckers will be among the main targets among the other woodland birds including marsh tit. We also hope to enjoy the first signs of spring including the first migrants and birdsong should be in full flow by now. We will also have the opportunity to explore the new visitor centre. This is a car visit.

Indoor Meeting. Members' Presentations, Photo Competition and AGM

This is always an enjoyable evening when members give their own slide presentations of bird and wildlife photos. A wide variety of subjects and images is guaranteed. We will also have judging and the results of the annual photographic competition. The standard is getting higher every year and there will no doubt some wonderful images to enjoy. We will also hold a short AGM. Come along and join us on the last indoor meeting before the summer break.

Outdoor Meeting- Rutland Water (coach trip)

Location: Rutland Water Nature Reserve.

A spring visit to the internationally famous reserve should be full of interest. The reserve is run by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust in conjunction with Anglian Water. Ospreys will have recently arrived back from their African wintering grounds and are sightings are virtually guaranteed. There should also be plenty of summer migrants in evidence as well as the resident birds. The reserve has excellent facilities with numerous hides and trails to explore. The coach will depart from Northgate (Borough Road) car park in Wakefield at 8am and we expect to be back in Wakefield at about 7pm. This is expected to be a popular trip so book early to avoid disappointment.
