April walk around Pant-y-Sais Fen

April walk around Pant-y-Sais Fen
John Roach

Sunday, 17 April 2016

It was a fine, generally sunny morning for the April walk. A willow warbler and chiffchaff were seen from the car park as well as some more common species. Two swallows were seen flying north. After a short walk along the road the group entered the fen area and walked around the fen boardwalk. Reed bunting were seen (see photo) and a cetti's warbler was heard. The boardwalk led to the canal where the group saw a blackcap and two birds of prey - a sparrow hawk and a buzzard. A grasshopper warbler was recognised by its song and a peacock butterfly flew past in the sunshine. The scrubland near to the A48 did not produce many birds and it was quiet morning for birds with only 23 species seen.
