Long-tailed tit perched on branch

We couldn't ask for any more from Moore !

At last our search for the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is at an end. No more is our leader the butt of jokes as location after location failed to produce this magical - no, almost mythical - bird ! Not one but three separate sightings at Moore Nature Reserve finally put this particular ghost to rest ! A lovely female provided excellent views (thanks to the sharp eyes of Shirley !) - albeit for some the views weren't so good. The male could be heard calling and occasionally drumming some distance away but never appeared to get closer. Perhaps the really cold morning had damped his ardour ! Whilst waiting in the cold wood we did see several Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, treecreeper, long-tailed tits, Siskin and Redpoll. Off to the lake and great views of a female Smew; Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Pochard and a couple of Little Grebe made the walk in the biting cold wind worth while. Moore Nature Reserve certainly seems to be the place to see this diminutive woodpecker.
