Nuthatch on branch

If you go down to the woods .....

Woodlands at this time of the year are good places to bird watch - birds singing and few leaves to obscure your view. However, the morning of our visit to Stapledon Wood was so cold that the birds just weren't singing. Plenty of Blue, Great and Coal Tits with the odd Long tailed Tits were feeding in the tree tops and undergrowth but we only heard 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming and only 1 Nuthatch calling. With persistence we were able to track down both species and have good views - with better views of the Woodpecker. The noise of calling birds abruptly stopped and moments later a Sparrowhawk flashed over the top of the trees. On the way back to the cars were found a very obliging Jay giving all good views of this normally shy bird. Near the car park we stumbled across a pair of Goldcrest feeding amongst the Ivy covered trunk of an old tree.
