BMW - we're proud to have it as our local reserve !

The clouds rolled back and the sun came out as thirty birders from the group descended on the Burton Mere Wetland reserve. We were met by Al, the warden, who took us on a behind the scenes look at the reserve. He spoken with great knowledge and unbounded enthusiasm about the reserve and its wildlife .... his obvious deep interest in conservation was infectious, as we all found ourselves discussing the needs of nesting birds, the effects of anti-predator fencing and many more issues that Al and his staff have to deal with on a daily basis. The birding was good as well - with lovely views of Yellow Wagtails ; 3 Wheatears, 6 Raven; 1 Marsh Harrier; 2 Kestrels; 3 Spotted Flycatcher and a very obliging Kingfisher not to mention many Shoveler, Teal, Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit on the lagoons. From the welcoming staff to the great variety of birds to see, BMW is a lovely place to 'while away' a few hours. In a parody of the BMW car manufacturers advertising, BMW the reserve is 'The Ultimate Birding Experience'
