Spirits of the mist !

Spirits of the mist !

As we approached Llandegla Forest the rain that had dogged us all the way from Wirral didn't abate and it looked like we were going to be in for a wash out! As we approached the area from which we could view the lekk we could hardly see more that 100 yards because of the low cloud and rain. After several anxious minutes we started to hear lekking going on but could we see them .... very frustrating !! Suddenly the mist lifted and first a single then a number of male Black Grouse could be seen on the distant ridge. Black and white birds could be seen moving about in the heather and grass, occasionally making small jumps into the air and fluttering their wings. Although we saw 13 birds flying we could only see 6 on the ground when they settled. To see and hear them performing on their lekking grounds was a delight. All too soon time was up and we headed back towards the centre for a well earned breakfast. However, the bird surprises weren't finished ... we encountered a number of Siskin in the trees on the path together with a lovely male Crossbill sitting at the top of a pine. The birds were brilliant and the breakfast was well earned. Our thanks go to Ian, the OneAdventure Centre Manager, for all his help for this excellent mornings birding.
