Hobby chasing dragonflies

The 'ghosts' of Cannock Chase

After the journey down we found that the light at Cannock wasn't really very good. Despite this, we soon caught up with a Tree Pipit singing from the top of a tree, which gave all present lovely views. In previous years we've had severel birds but this year we only found the one ! However, this disappointment was soon forgotten because of the fabulous find by Julia of a lovely Long Eared Owl .... what a 'cracking' find !!! On the advice of local birders we stayed in an area we'd not waited at before for Nightjar and despite birds being heard calling, unfortunately none were seen. Out disappointment was compounded when other birders near to us saw a Woodcock which we missed ! A nice bird seen earlier in the evening had been a Hobby, no doubt feeding of the dragonflies found around the wet areas of Cannock Chase. As the night drew in we moved back to the cars ... being harrassed by the local midges all the way ..... and reflected on the evenings birding. Although, we hadn't seen the Nightjar / Woodcock we had set out for, this was more than made up for by the brilliant views of the Owl.
