Summer Barbecue

Summer Barbecue

Our first social gathering this year, a summer barbecue arranged by the Committee, took place on Saturday, 10th July on the open farmland at JAC (Just around the Corner), a youth charity on the edge of Wokingham.

25 of us (Covid restrictions still in place) enjoyed meeting up on a slightly cool evening, which started with a few threatening rain drops but ended with a glorious deep golden sunset.

This was the first time many of us had seen each other since the start of the earliest Lockdown last year in March, and a vibrant evening was enjoyed by all. Patrick Crowley our Chairman along with Adrian Roberts our Technical and Publicity Officer (see photo), donned aprons and took charge of the barbecue with cool aplomb in the smoke and heat. Burgers, buns and onions were the order of the day along with salads and soft drinks. Members brought their own alcohol and the clink of glasses and sound of 'Cheers!' resounded from the loosely grouped table gatherings amid much laughter and smiling faces.

JAC (just around the Corner) is set in 15 acres of tranquil countryside. It is a Christian youth charity offering a range of hands-on activities eg art, crafts, music, carpentry, mechanics, horticulture and pottery, and specialises in equine therapy. Our barbecue was set up next to a field with donkeys and goats. Close by were stables, paddocks, and a small riding arena.

A dirt track led to open fields, one of which had native trees planted along the perimeter by a working party of members from our own RSPB group, to create wildlife corridors in place of fences. Adrian Roberts has been a Volunteer at the JAC centre for many years and proudly showed us around outside. The gardens (carefully tended by students) were bursting with bold manicured splashes of colour, and a Narnia style lamp-post overlooked it all. A very special place indeed, and we felt privileged to be able to enjoy our evening there.
