Indoor meeting - a talk by Professor Tim Birkhead, titled: Long-term study of guilemots on Skomer

Monday 19 October

7.30 pm

Price: Group members free. £2.00 donation from non-group members. Children free.

Professor Tim Birkhead, who has filmed with Sir David Attenborough for a BBC film, will be our special guest speaker at our October meeting.

Prof Birkhead is a well-known UK ornithologist and best-selling scientific author whose research on bird reproduction and evolution has reached worldwide acclaim. He will talk about his career. His research, including his 46-year study of guillemots on Skomer Island in Wales, has resulted in greater understanding of bird's reproductive behaviour and highlighted why monitoring seabird populations can be an important indicator of the health of the whole marine environment in the face of climate change.
Tim talks about the long-term work on Skomer studying guillemots, and how that is being threatened by funding cuts. As the climate changes and we impact our environment in other ways, we need to monitor those things which are barometers, letting us know what effects we are really having.

During this talk Tim will also refer to his fascination with eggs that led to him writing his third book in 2017.

At the end of this talk there will be an opportunity for all members to donate financially to the Skomer Guillemot project to help ensure this valuable work of study continues.

Please note: this event is run by an RSPB volunteer group and is organised for interested members of the local community.
