Booking essential

Join your enthusiastic guides to explore Havergate and learn all about Suffolk's only Island.

Start your journey as soon as you step foot on the boat and then spend the day with your guide looking at the current wildlife on the lagoons whilst you hear about life on the island in times past; why the RSPB took it on, the trails and tribulations of such a low lying island, the wildlife that makes the island its home, finally looking forward to the future and how we hope to protect it.

After the 20 minute boat journey from Orford Quay you will spend around 3 hours with your guide exploring this unique island in the Alde-Ore estuary before returning by boat to Orford.

The RSPB  boat 'October Storm' will depart from Orford Quay at 9am and mid day (extra boats may be laid on if there is a high demand) and you will arrive back at Orford Quay at approx 12.45 and 3.30pm respectively.

Places on these trips are strictly limited because of the small capacity of the RSPB boat, so please book early. We have no life saving equipment for under 3 year old children on our boat and therefore can not accept bookings for this age group.

We highly recommend stout footwear, warm clothing, wet weather clothing and sun protection at all times of year.

You need to have a reasonable level of fitness for this trip because it requires getting on and off the boat and a lot of walking on uneven and sometimes muddy ground on the island.

There are no refreshments available on the island. Visitors need to bring their own food and drink for these trips. We have one public toilet on the island.

In adverse weather conditions, the trip may be cancelled at short notice at the warden's discretion; in this case, you will get a full refund of your booking fee.

If you would like to discuss a specialised or private trip for your family or local wildlife group perhaps please contact us on havergate.island@rspb.org.uk.
