A walk round the RSPB Otmoor Reserve

Otmoor has become an important RSPB Reserve, bringing back much of the old wet moorland habitat, lost when the area was drained for farming. Superb selection of farmland and wetland birds can be expected.

Please note that there are no toilets at the Reserve, so use the facilities at Cherwell Valley services on the M40 on your way down.

Otmoor RSPB Reserve.

Revised instructions added 7th April!

Travelling southbound, exit the M40 at J9, at roundabout take the 3rd exit onto A34 to Oxford/Newbury. After 3.2 miles take the B4027 exit towards Bletchingdon/Heathfield/Islip and in 0.1 miles turn right onto Bletchingdon Road/B4027 and continue to follow it for 3.8 miles. (Going through Islip the road goes round to the left past the Red Lion on High Street, continue straight through the village on Kings Head Lane then changes to Wheatley Road). Over the River Ray and Common Road should be the third road on the left, signposted Beckley.
In 0.8 miles turn left onto New Inn Road then the road bends sharply round to the right, High Street. Pass the Abingdon Arms on the left and then sharp left onto Otmoor Lane. Follow this down to turn left and right at the end to find the car park.
Please bring own picnic lunch, but we may have lunch at the pub, to be decided on the day depending on time and circumstances.
Please note that there are no toilet facilities at the reserve, so please use the toilets at Cherwell Valley services on the M40 just before J9. The Abingdon Arms does not open until 12pm and we can use the toilets there when we leave the reserve.
Should there be a heatwave, hopefully not. As there is very little cover, drinking more water and lack of toilet facilities, an alternative venue may be chosen, possibly Wolseley centre ST17 0WT that was cancelled.
Please inform me if you are coming to Otmoor.
