Black Grouse Lek at RSPB Geltsdale

Saturday 25 April

5am - 7am

Price: £16 for RSPB members and £20 for non-members

Booking essential

From early spring, male black grouse gather at dawn to display and vie for dominance, flashing their white tail feathers to impress the female birds hiding nearby.

Black grouse are renowned for their elusive nature, so a guided walk offers a special chance to witness a lek first-hand, without the danger of disturbing the birds.

Participants are advised to dress warmly as we will not be using a hide and a short stiff walk might be involved to reach the vantage point.  Tea and coffee will be provided following the walk.

Please note that we will be watching the birds from a distance that is not suitable for photographing the birds close up, however a telescope will be on hand to get good views. Booking is essential, as places are limited.

Participants will meet at the Reserve Car Park, grid Ref: NY588584.
