Hello everyone! I have a good handle on my regular garden visitors but now that there are lots of baby birds around there seems to be a hard-to-identify brown bird every other day. There's one in particular... same size as a blackbird, brown plummage with a tiny lighter stripe in the middle of the chest, dark beak. I thought it was a juvenile blackbird at first but it definitely doesn't have the markings. I wasn't able to snap a pic unfortunately. He/she was on my suet feeder. Any ideas?
Hi Zelly, it's definitely a Starling. I agree with Catlady that it's a juvenile; the black beak confirms that. The adult's beak is yellow. The plumage of a juvenile darkens as they mature. Here's one I'v just photographed.
Might it be a juvenile Starling? This one, taken in my garden recently, shows a little bit of a pale-ish stripe down the front and of course they love hanging fat feeders, especially at the moment!
Hi Nigel, thanks for the reply. Fantastic photo! Not my bird unfortunately. Guess it'd be a lot better if I had a pic but he's a lot darker in colour. I'll try to catch him on camera!
I managed to get him on camera. The pictures weren't great quality so here's a video. He was with a female blackbird so maybe it is a juvenile but it just doesn't seem to have the markings. Let me know what you think!
Hi Zelly, I think it is a young starling, not a blackbird.
Hi Catlady, thanks for the reply :) I didn't think it was a juvenile starling as he looks a lot brighter in Nigel's photo but having looked at more photos it looks like it could be it. Very cute bird in any case!
Whoo hoo, I got something correct!
