Pipistrelle bat flying at night

Big Wild Sleepout

29-31 July. Swap your home for nature’s home and discover a secret world of wildlife.

Every year, the RSPB encourages the nation to sleep under the stars to discover more about wildlife at night. Big Wild Sleepout takes place over the weekend of 29-31 July.

What goes on in your garden at night?

While you’re tucked up in bed, the natural world outside comes alive as nocturnal creatures go about their lives under cover of darkness.

How do I take part in Big Wild Sleepout?

You can camp out in your garden or pitch up at one of our reserves. Register for your free Night-time Passport, full of fun ideas and activities. We hope your Sleepout is an unforgettable adventure which gives your family more reason to love nature.

TV presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff on why her family will be sleeping out

I love the Big Wild Sleepout, we do it every year as a family. It's a great way of getting kids out and about and connected to nature. As we all know, kids spend way too much time indoors and need to spend more time outdoors, away from screens. I passionately believe that every child should have the opportunity to establish a really strong connection with the natural world and this is the RSPB's way of encouraging that. It's really easy to get involved in Big Wild Sleepout. Just register online and you'll be sent a free pack stuffed with ideas and goodies. You don't even have to have a tent, you can just get a rug or a mattress, stick it out in the garden and enjoy being outdoors. And, for more of a group experience, there are activities planned at lots of RSPB reserves all across the country, giving people privileged access to some really special wild places. As a conservationist I am very concerned about the world my children are growing up in. But I'm also aware that children are part of the solution. We need to help them develop a love for their environment - it's the first step.
