Bath Local Group 50th anniversary with Miranda Krestovnikoff: Pioneering Conservation - Future Challenges

50 years young! A special evening with RSPB President Miranda Krestovnikoff speaking on the future challenges for conservation and the RSPB, as well as her wildlife experiences - please don't miss it! Miranda is a television presenter, zoologist, author and conservationist. She was one of the original presenters on the BAFTA award winning BBC2 series COAST and is a resident wildlife expert on the BBC One Show. There will also be a special raffle and refreshments, including a special anniversary cake for Miranda to cut! RSPB staff and volunteers, past and present, will also be joining us to mark the occasion. Tickets are available at www.bathboxoffice.org.uk/whatson/pioneering-conservation-future-challenges. Please note this event is on Tuesday, rather than our usual monthly Wednesday talk.

FIELD TRIP - Stourhead

A half-day visit to the lovely Stourhead led by Felicity Gilmour and Lucy Delve. The target birds will be woodland species and autumn migrants. Meet at the National Trust car park at Alfred's tower. The timings will be from 09.30 to 13.00.

FIELD TRIP BY COACH - Keyhaven Marshes, near Lymington, Hampshire

Location: Keyhaven Marshes, Lymington, Hampshire

Join our joint coach trip with the Bath NTAS to the lovely Keyhaven reserve. A relaxing day by coach follows our early start, but the target birds will be waders and wildfowl. This trip will be led jointly by Tom Rogers and Tom Pinckheard.

We leave Avon Street car park at 08.00 and return 18.00 approx. Booking forms will be available at the September meeting or contact Tom.

Our next outing is more local to Bath. Meet at Box Rock Circus at Valens Terrace for a 10.00 to 14.00 walk. We will be looking for winter thrushes, farmland birds, Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher and anything else. This walk will be lead by Glen Maddison.

FIELD TRIP - Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve

Location: Blashford Lakes NNR Hampshire

A joint coach outing with Bath NATS to this popular reserve in Hampshire. Our Leader will be Tom Pinckheard. The coach will leave the Riverside Avon Street coach park at 08.00 with other pick up points and will return around 18.00. The target birds for the day will be wildfowl, woodland birds and herons (there is a heronry nearby). Booking and prepayment will be essential for this trip and booking forms will have pickup times and be available from the indoor meetings later in the year.

Joint our expert Leader Lucy Delve for a day with target birds of Booming Bitterns, Egrets, Great Crested Grebes display, wildfowl and raptors. A day with Lucy's keen ear is always worthwhile. Limited to 15 persons only, this Saturday morning visit must be booked and forms will be available at the indoor meetings later in 2019.

FIELD TRIP - Elan Valley, Wales

Our next coach trip is again a joint day out with the Bath NATS group. The target birds in this lovely wooded Valley will be Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Common Redstart, Whinchat which was seen well on our last trip. This time however we will not be visiting Gigrin Farm Red Kite feeding station but they might be spotted nonetheless. Again our Leader will be Lucy Delve.

FIELD TRIP - Brean Down, Somerset coast

Location: National Trust Brean Down, near Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset

After a short walk along the Axe estuary there will be a walk along the top of Brean Down and back. Stout footwear necessary with walking poles useful for steep ascents and descents. The target for the day will be summer migrants, passage sea birds and raptors. Our leader will be Pauline Robinson. Bring a picnic lunch.

FIELD TRIP - Martin Down NNR near Blandford forum, Dorset

Location: Martin Down NNR on the A364 Blandford Forum to Salisbury road.

An all day meeting with leader Tom Rogers promises to try and locate the now rare and elusive Turtle Dove, and Lesser Whitethroat along with flora of orchids and butterflies on the National Nature Reserve. Bring a picnic lunch. Limited numbers so booking and confirmation with leader Tom will be required.
