Field Trip - Brandon Marsh

Location: Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve

Located near Coventry Brandon Marsh has a variety of pools , reedbeds, grassland and woodland and is frequented by a huge variety of birds throughout the year. Nine hides and a cafe provide comfort for the visitors but some areas can get muddy so sensible footwear is strongly advised.

Field Trip to Footscray Meadows with Ralph & Brenda Todd

Location: Foots Cray Meadows. Meet Leafield Lane (off North Cray Road)

We will be looking for resident species of woodpeckers, nuthtach and tits and walking along the River Cray looking for kingfisher and grey wagtails. Wildfowl will also be coming out of their eclipse plumage and who knows what else might turn up.

Field Trip - Lynford Arboretum and Lackford Lakes

Location: Lynford Arboretum and Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve.

Our first stop is an area adjacent to the Arboretum where we hope to see hawfinches atop the trees and some small birds by the river. We then move onto Lackford Lakes with its extensive wet habitat favoured not only by wildfowl but also bittern, siskin. kingfisher and many others.

Field Trip - Rainham Marshes - Ralph & Brenda Todd

Location: RSPB Rainham Marshes reserve

Meet in the car park for our annual pre Christmas visit to our nearest RSPB reserve. Peregrines and barn owl are now resident in the area and at this time of year we would hope to see redwing and fieldfare adding variety to the thrushes, finches, tits and buntings. Wildfowl should also be abundant.

Field Trip - RSPB Dungeness - Martin Burke.

Bitterns and water rail will be in the reedbeds. Smew. goldeneye and goosander may well be on the pits with a variety of more common wildfowl. There is also the possibility of seeing the long eared owl amongst the willow trees.

This reserves position on the Solent gives us the chance of seeing sea ducks like eider and scoter along with a variety of waders and gulls. while the extensive freshwater habitats are favoured by many different bbirds

They will be looking at the many and varied habitats of the parks and open spaces in the London Borough of Bexley. Whilst birds will form the primary focus the variety of other species including butterflies, dragonflies and insects that can be enjoyed in the familiar and not so well know places in Bexley.

Indoor Meeting - Wildlife in Finnmark - Jeff Blincow.

Location: John Fisher Church Hall, Thanet Road, Bexley.

Jeff visited Finnmark in 1980 and has been fortunate to return every summer over recent years to enjoy and study the wildlife. Finnmark is the northern part of Norway with Finland to the South and Russia to the east. Most of the area where Jeff recorded wildlife is either classic alpine or arctic tundra habitats. These are seriously harsh conditions for plants and animals to survive and the talk will focus on these true survivors of Northern Europe.

Field Trip - Sculthorpe & Holkham - Leader - Martin Burke.

Location: Sculthorpe and Holkham

We will stop at Sculthorpe for a couple of hours so that we can explore the wet woodlands and reedbed habitat. We should find a good mix of smaller birds including woodpeckers ,tits and finches with a possibility of brambling and some migrant warblers. Moving onto Holkham we will check the marsh areas for waders and wildfowl and perhaps a lingering goose.
