Local Walk - Crossness Nature Reserve and Thames Foreshore - Ralph 7 Brenda Todd

Location: Meet at the reserve perimeter off Norman Road, Belvedere.

With a falling Thames tide waders and wildfowl should offer good views and at this time of year. One never knows what might turn up. On the reserve it is a good time to see the last of the summer visitors and for some passage birds including whinchats and yellow wagtails.

Coach trip to RSPB Arne, Dorset

Location: Arne RSPB Reserve

This reserve is an area of heathland ideally suited for birds migrating southwards. Ospreys are regular here in the autumn as are spoonbills. Many small birds like swallows and flycatchers might be seen. Good numbers of waders including godwits, plovers and avocet should be present and we hope to see the resident Dartford Warbler. Other wildlife could include Sika deer and dragonflies. Facilities are limited so a packed lunch is required.

Field trip to Cley Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserve.

Location: Cley Nature Reserve Norfolk.

This reserve is comprised of fresh marsh and extensive reed beds which along with adjacent grassland are home to marsh harriers, bearded tits and bitterns and in winter they hold a variety of wildfowl. Other birds that might be seen are short eared owls, pink footed geese and snow buntings. The visitors centre serves hot and cold food with a view over the reserve.
There is an entrance charge for Non NWT members.

Car field trip to Elmley National Nature Reserve

Location: Elmley National Nature Reserve

From the A249 cross the Swale via the old Kingsferry Bridge onto the B2231 and after about a mile turn right at the brown RSPB sign. Follow the track between the farm buildings then across the grazing marsh to the Kingshill Farm car park (£5 per car). The only facilities are toilets. There is a mile walk to the first hide and waterproofs are essential.

This reserve attracts winter visitors including short eared owls, harriers, merlin, waders and large flocks of wigeon.
