Thursday, 19 July 2018

On the 14th July, 20 +adults and children gathered at the entrance to East Wickham Open Space in Welling for our last butterfly walk of the summer. More...

Thursday, 24 May 2018

It's not just birds that the RSPB are interested in and Thursday 24 May was the first butterfly walk for the Bexley Local Group. It took place at Foots Cray Meadow and was led by Mike Robinson. More...

COACH TRIP TO LANCASHIRE MAY 2018

Friday, 18 May 2018

This year's group holiday to Lancashire was a visit to four new reserves for the majority of the party. We set out early and arrived at our first destination Coombes Valley which is in Staffordshire. To get there we had to drive down some narrow country lanes which might have been explained by the fact that the satnav had been set to car as opposed to coach More...

Nightingale singing

Saturday, 12 May 2018

Waiting patiently for the main gate to the reserve car park to open the "early birds" amongst us managed brief views of a calling lesser whitethroat. Its call can be likened to the first half call of a yellowhammer-'a little bit of bread (but no cheese)'. A mixture of robins, dunnocks, goldfinches and wrens were heard as well and a couple of Egyptian geese flew. More...

RSPB Bexley Group local walk, in partnership with the London Wildlife Trust, Braeburn Park, Saturday 28 April 2018

Saturday, 28 April 2018

After the torrential downpour overnight, it was heartening to see that around thirty adults, plus children, had donned their wellies and arrived at Braeburn park for a guided bird walk. More...

Thursday, 19 April 2018

It's hard to believe but after 39 years this was the first group visit to Martens Grove - a beautiful, small area of woodland/park close to the old A2 and the Crayford gasometer. Eight members (three of whom were first timers) joined us on what was to be the hottest day of the year so far (hottest April day on record by some accounts). Perhaps birds don't like the heat as much as we do. I if they do, they weren't as appreciative as we or the butterflies were of a lovely sunny morning with clear blue skies. More...

Little ringed plover wading in shallow water

Sunday, 15 April 2018

With an early start we eagerly awaited for Jay and Kay coaches to pick us up from Bexleyheath. Once on board we steadied our way to Peterborough services for a quick comfort break. We were soon on our way to RSPB Frampton Marsh. More...

Male green woodpecker feeding on ground

Sunday, 25 March 2018

What a difference a week makes! After last Saturday's walk in a blizzard, the weather may have been grey and damp but felt positively tropical compared to the minus temperatures we have experienced in the last few weeks. As a result, 20 people turned up for a walk around Shrewsbury Park SE18, a place many of us hadn't visited before. More...

Sunday, 25 March 2018

Advance planning of field trips can be risky. Twenty four hours before 13 members joined us for our walk, Foots Cray Meadows was carpeted with snow with an uncomfortable cold north easterly wind. An afternoon of sun disposed of the snow and so when we met there was some cloud, later sunshine, blue sky and no wind. We were set for an enjoyable three hours of some familiar/unfamiliar habitats. More...

Barn owl looking over its shoulder

Sunday, 18 March 2018

The beast from the east didn't stop us but by Jove it got into us. With the wind chill at minus eight we left the warmth of our trusty Jay and Kay coach leaving Chris, our driver, trying to keep warm while we went birding. More...

Tuesday, 27 February 2018

A birdwatching walk under threat from the beast from the east. If we'd listened to the forecast we'd have stayed in bed - as it was the nine members who braved the -3 degrees and joined us at The Star Sidcup Place. More...

Coach Trip to Slimbridge, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. Sunday 25 February 2018.

Sunday, 25 February 2018

Inevitably these days a drive west from London along the M4 or M40 will offer the birdwatcher good views of red kite, in ones, two's or threes and that was the case as we sped towards Bristol under blue skies. A good start to our day. More...

Thursday, 25 January 2018

The first local group walk of 2018 was, we have to confess, approached with some trepidation given the recent prolonged period of wet weather, especially that of the preceding day. A recce had confirmed how wet the trails were.. More...

Sunday, 17 December 2017

With camera, binoculars and a little nervous twitch I led my first RSPB Bexley Group coach trip to Dungeness More...

Sunday, 26 November 2017

When leading a trip it is easy to assume that if one has a good plan then all will be fine, and as we traversed Essex and Suffolk with frost lying in the shadows I anticipated drinking a coffee at the Barton Mills before continuing north, just like last time. Calamity! As we arrived at the snack bar at 8:58 the shutters were down! Fortunately the "Winter Season" opening time was 09:00 and by 09:05 I was at the head of the queue watching my sausage roll being prepared by a no-nonsense lady chef with some very tasteful tattoos More...

Tuesday, 14 November 2017

Two carrion crows, four magpies and 13 ring-necked parakeets assembled in the Danson Stables car park to welcome the 23 members and friends who joined Brenda and I for our winter walk in Danson Park. The cold, sunny conditions of yesterday had reverted to milder, high cloud today - not bad conditions for the three hour stroll More...

Friday, 3 November 2017

Gloomy visibility welcomed 15 members/friends for a return visit to this local park. With no wind the low cloud and mizzle hung around all morning. The roof of Marlow House wasn't even visible as we assembled in the Leisure Centre car park. Twenty minutes later, having heard the call of a peregrine we finally found one perched amongst the aerials which soon flew off in pursuit of a second bird that had flown by. More...

Saturday, 21 October 2017

Storm Brian did not deter 13 hardy members today but judging when to leave the hides to miss the showers was fundamental. More...

Monday, 2 October 2017

From the first viewpoint the passage of hirundines overhead mainly of sand martins was seen. Throughout the day sand and house martins plus swallows trickled overhead on migration. A little egret, gadwall and coot were on the water. On the shingle beach excellent views were had of a couple of flocks of turnstone with their tortoise colouring plus small groups of ringed plover. These kept our attention for quite a while. As we went through the gate and onto the reserve proper the powerful song of a Cetti's warbler was heard and a pied wagtail flew overhead calling. More...

Sunday, 1 October 2017

The first walk of the autumn season and it was decidedly chilly, overcast and with damp in the air. Hence the 21 who joined me (dressed in shorts and light top) and Brenda were all sensibly dressed in layers, some with woolly hats and gloves. I felt very under-dressed though not at all cold More...

Yorkshire 10th - 13th June 2017.

Saturday, 10 June 2017

This was the group's eagerly awaited return to Yorkshire following our successful visit in 2015. When the coach left Bexleyheath you would have been excused for thinking that there was an excited group of school children on board our coach instead of a group of keen birdwatchers. More...

Wednesday, 7 June 2017

This combination of venues generally provides a good selection of birds including some that we rarely or never see elsewhere on our coach trips and at a dry and sunny Weeting Heath we were quickly guided by the warden to a spot where we could stand safely and view a distant but unmistakable stone curlew that was across the road. More...

Monday, 5 June 2017

Fourteen members/friends joined us for this walk along the River Shuttle into Bexley Park Woods. Good to see a few new faces. The weather forecast was a little unsettled with showers but in the end we were discarding layers in favour of the warm sunny conditions that accompanied us. More...

Tuesday, 25 April 2017

At least it was a beautiful clear blue sky with sunshine - quite like April - except for the Arctic cold breeze arriving this far south in time for the walk which was attended by 11 members. More...

Sunday, 23 April 2017

The car park abounded with the explosive calls of a Cetti's warbler. Two could be seen skulking in one of the small trees. Excellent views of sedge warbler atop reeds in full song were also seen from the car park and throughout our walk today with their pertinent eye strip in full view. They put on their song flight as well. Invisible reed warblers were also present today. More...

Sunday, 12 March 2017

Well this time the weather surpassed itself, possibly the best spring day of the year with warm, sunny blue skies so the omens were good. We arranged this walk hopefully to coincide with the bloom of wild daffodils in these ancient woods. More...

Bexley RSPB Field Outing to Rainham Marshes RSPB Reserve Saturday December 17th 2016

Tuesday, 20 December 2016

Male green woodpecker feeding on ground

Tuesday, 6 December 2016

With fog forecast we were delighted to see 17 members (including four or five newcomers to our walks) arrive at the car park for this winter walk. As it happened the murk soon disappeared and we enjoyed some lovely sunshine for the three hour walk. More...

Sunday, 20 November 2016

On this day with the words of the forecasters "Amber Weather Warning" fresh in our minds we headed for Sculthorpe Moor near Fakenham in Norfolk with just intermittent light drizzle to keep the wipers busy. Arriving at the Hawk and Owl Trust Visitor Centre, a new venue for the Group, we alighted in a dry spell and after checking out the facilities headed out onto the nature trail More...

Thursday, 27 October 2016

Well, the colour of the leaves on the trees suggested it was autumn and eventually the sun broke through to help make this another enjoyable local event. It was attended by 20 members/guests including a few new faces which is always a great pleasure- especially when two are on holiday from Australia. It was nice to show off one of the jewels in Bexley's crown. More...

Saturday, 15 October 2016

The sun was shining with a blue sky. However the cloud built up as the morning progressed but luckily the rain held off until the walk ended. A mistle thrush perched on a tree as I entered the reserve and there were plenty of birds to be seen and heard in the car park but only two people turned up today More...

Male chaffinch singing on branch

Saturday, 19 December 2015

The adage "fail to prepare, prepare to fail" was at the front of my mind as I approached the car park at this venue, so popular with residents of the nearby Medway Towns. Through the intervention of some nasty little "gremlin" at the planning stage the motion of the tide was the mirror image of what we wanted and too much wet mud was already visible as the waters of the Medway estuary retreated towards the sea More...
