Heysham and Leighton Moss - 13/9/14
Kingfisher - Cheryl Delaney

Saturday, 13 September 2014

Our first stop was Heysham where we walked along the path that runs around the power station. Here we got good views of little gull and Mediterranean gull amongst others at the first outfall. We got plenty of all the expected species.

We then proceeded to Leighton Moss reserve where we went to the saltmarsh first. At the Eric Morecambe hide we had fantastic views of a kingfisher, it was just outside the window of the hide for about half an hour. There were also plenty of waders about on the saltmarsh.

We then went to the main reserve which, because they had lowered the water level at Lillian's hide, was full of waders. The highlights were little stint, great white egret, water rail, snipe and ruff and one of our number even found a pectoral sandpiper! We got a total of 37 species.
