Collared dove sitting in grass

Garden Bird Feeding Survey January 2008

January was a mild wet month with a short cold snap towards the end. Several of you commented that on some days you felt the weather affected the birds feeding. Sixty-six people took part this year, 4 more than last year. Forty species were seen, which is one down on last year. Thanks to all who took part.

As you can see from the full list below there has been some movement of species up or down the list. Blackbird has taken the top spot again this year. House sparrow has dropped to 12th in the list and was seen in 31 gardens. Ring necked parakeet continues to do well, up to 14th in the list and seen in 27 gardens.

In the full list the percentage of birds/days is shown for the top ten species. The 2007 positions appear in brackets. Birds seen last year but not this year were lesser black back gull, marsh tit, pheasant and chiffchaff. new birds seen this year herring gull, siskin and grey heron.
