Kelsey Park Heron Watch 2014

Kelsey Park Heron Watch 2014

Heron Watch - Kelsey Park 6/4/14
On a rather overcast day several of us gathered together in Kelsey Park for the annual heron watch. We were accompanied by 'Friends of Kelsey Park' and Bromley Council Environmental Services Department.
The Friends were at one end of the lake whilst we were half way down on the Lawn with a good view over the island. There are reportedly 26 nests, with 28 youngsters. However I feel that this may be an underestimate as we could clearly see three nests which had as many as three youngsters in them.
We encouraged the general public to view the nests through telescopes, not an easy technique for some people especially the younger ones. Having said that, most seemed to get something out of the experience!
Interestingly we watched as one pair changed over, with the returning heron regurgitating three large goldfish for its partner. Someone's pond is a now a few prized fish short!
Thankfully the rain held off for the most part, and many people got excellent views of the herons that they otherwise would not have seen.
