Short report and bird list for our day trip to Rainham Marshes on 12.05 18.

Short report and bird list for our day trip to Rainham Marshes on 12.05 18.

The weather at Rainham was a bit drizzly, but not enough to dampen the spirits of our group. We had particularly good sightings of reed and sedge warblers, both of which were sitting up where they could be seen as well as heard throughout the day. Whitethroat and bearded tits put in brief appearances, but unusually we saw not a single raptor.

Despite this we ended the day with a list of 55 species. A cuckoo was heard on and off all day but only showed itself to a lucky few. It was nice to see a lot of swifts hunting insects overhead and to hear the lapwings calling. Reed buntings were visible all over the reserve. A water vole was seen, and photographed by Allan Hong; the pictures can be seen on our Meetup site. Click the link for that below to see them.

Day trip to RSPB Rainham Marshes

Day trip to RSPB Rainham Marshes

Rainham Marshes protects 411 hectares of ancient, low-lying grazing marsh in the Thames Estuary. Its complex of wet grassland and ditches, together with grassland and scrub, supports many breeding and wintering birds. Wildlife also includes scarce wetland plants and insects, and a key population of the nationally declining water vole. We'll be looking for ruff, greenshank, whimbrel, warblers, possible garganay, cuckoo, bearded tit, yellow wagtail, whinchat, barn owl and hobby.

There is a visitor centre with shop and café. Leaders James Aylward and Michael Cook

Cost: Entry £6 for non-RSPB members.

Meeting Point: Meet at Fenchurch Street Station for the 9.40am train to Purfleet. From there it is a pleasant 15 minute walk along the river to the reserve.

No need to book
