Saturday, 21 July 2018

Around 30 of us braved the blistering July heat on Saturday 21st for our coach trip to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve in Cambridgeshire More...

Coach trip to Rutland Water, May 20th

Thursday, 8 June 2017

The purpose of this trip was to see ospreys. In that we were entirely successful - it would be hard to fail at Rutland Water, particularly visiting the Lyndon Centre on the South Shore. But there is much else to see there, and this part of the reserve is much more compact, making it easier to get round. More...

Coach trip to Cliffe Pools, 22nd April

Saturday, 22 April 2017

Imagine a natural Eisteddfod. Or if such a thing is possible, a Swedish Eisteddfod: a smorgasbord of songsters vying for top spot. Such was Cliffe pools on Saturday, but we've no idea who won. The contest was not for our benefit. The prizes on offer were possession of a patch of territory and mating rights. More...

Coach trip to Thorney Island, Sussex, February 18th

Saturday, 18 February 2017

If you came on our previous trip to Thorney Island, three years ago, you may recall a wild and windy day. This trip could not have been more different, with sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures. Thanks to Andrew Peel for the trip report. More...

Pink feet and shore malarkey.

Saturday, 14 January 2017

Despite dire warnings of thundersnow, snowmageddon, and other biblical scale floods and tempests preceding our trip to Holkham, the day passed without incident bathed in nothing more than sparkling sunshine and clear blue skies. For sure it was cold and there was a stiff breeze on the dunes but Holkham was unaffected by the previous day's gales and tidal surges. More...

Day trip to Beddington Farmlands, 2nd October 2016

Thursday, 13 October 2016

Sixteen of us spent a good 4 hours birdwatching here, as the day gradually warmed up and the sun came out. More...

Male bearded tit perching on Phragmites

Thursday, 13 October 2016

We started out in a marshy field (just off the coach) and we saw a kestrel hunting, several little egrets flew past us and we startled several snipe out of cover into flight: what a good start! More...

Coach trip to Welney, 14th May 2016.

Tuesday, 24 May 2016

Welney was a new venue for many of us on the trip so we were all looking forward to finding out what they had to offer. We were all greeted warmly by the friendly and helpful volunteers who guided us through the entrance into a very well appointed visitor's centre. More...

Wednesday, 27 April 2016

Forty two of us went to Paxton Pits where we saw 70 species of birds altogether. Other wildlife seen by some included a grass snake (see photo), a muntjac deer and a stoat. Great day out. More...

Coach trip to RSPB Cliffe Pools on the 9th January

Tuesday, 12 January 2016

We are grateful to Magnus Andersson for this report. Dawn was breaking as we left London Embankment at 08:00 and the days birding started proper around 10:00 by the St Helen's C Of E Church in Cliffe village where we got Chaffinch, Mistle Thrush, Goldfinch, Collared Dove and Great Tit. We scared a Kestrel off the church tower but enjoyed the varied chatter from House Sparrows and Starlings in the trees and bushes. More...

Lots of water, interesting ducks, iridescent pheasant, goldcrests, great-crested grebes, nesting cormorants and a vague smell of burning cakes. More...

Day trip to Lee Valley, 28 Feb 2015.

Saturday, 28 February 2015

The group's start and finish point was at Cheshunt Rail Station. The weather was dull and grey; however we did enjoy the walk. Our first stop was at Teal Hide; from the hide we saw Shovelers, dark Pheasant and a single Chinese Muntjac. Along the path, the group saw Treecreeper and a Chiffchaff. More...

Coach trip to Minsmere 14th February

Saturday, 14 February 2015

It was almost a full coach to Minsmere, fully booked but there were the inevitable last-minute drop-outs which left three empty seats. The RSPB put on a cracking day for us; OK the sun didn't sun, but then the wind didn't wind and the rain didn't rain on us either. More...

Mud, glorious mud

Friday, 13 February 2015

Mud is a much maligned resource. We dismiss it as dirty, unpleasant and a thing to be avoided. Arriving at Two Tree Island last Sunday and walking down to the jetty we were confronted with mud as far as the eye could see. It was low tide and the mud looked rather beautiful gleaming in the sunshine. More...

Are those geese flying backwards?

Thursday, 15 January 2015

After a week of dodgy weather and doom-laden forecasts, Doreen, co-leader of our Holkham trip on Saturday, made a bold prediction as we left London. "We will drive through a weather front on the way, but the weather will have cleared up by the time we get there". More...

Coach trip to Hickling Broad and Stubb Mill

Saturday, 13 December 2014

The day dawned clear and frosty and, as ever, my intention to sleep through the coach journey to Hickling was thwarted by the constant distraction of the view from the window. Fields frosted in pristine white, misty vistas straight out of Lord of the Rings, blue skies, sunshine and skeletal trees. On arrival, Hickling did not disappoint with reeds glowing in the winter sun, and huge skies reflecting azure in the water. More...

Coach trip to Pagham Harbour, 11th October

Saturday, 11 October 2014

A brilliant day at Pagham yesterday. The weather forecast was not inspiring but apart from one short sharp shower early on we had a day of little wind and warm sunshine. The Pagham landscape looked at its spectacular best and the birds didn't disappoint either. We had 78 species in total which has to be a good day's birding by any standard; what was most surprising for me was to see brent geese and swallows in the same scope view! More...

Coach trip to Titchwell Marsh, 20th September

Saturday, 20 September 2014

For me, the memorable thing about this trip was that it felt like the first day of autumn. There was an edge to the wind, an unfamiliar chill after this summer's extended enfolding balminess. Not that the cool fingers of autumn seemed to bother the birds. More attuned to the cycle of the seasons than our coach full of cosseted humans, they were getting on with business as usual. More...

Many thanks to Shailesh Kumar Patel for this picture of a young whitethroat taken on our trip to Lakenheath and for his report. We would welcome any other members' pictures and reports which we can place here or on our Facebook page. More...

Coach trip to Rutland Water

Saturday, 24 May 2014

This was our first trip to the South Shore of Rutland Water. The weather forecast was awful. Would we see any ospreys? Would there be enough of interest to sustain us for a whole day? Did it rain? Of course we did; of course there was; of course it did; read on..... More...

January coach trip to Titchwell Marsh

Saturday, 11 January 2014

There are some trips when it doesn't matter what birds you see, it is sufficient just to be there and soak up the atmosphere. This was one of those days; the sun shone; the light sparkled off water; the air was clean, fresh and cold. Titchwell worked its magic. More...
