Adult black-tailed godwit in summer plummage, at the RSPB Snettisham nature reserve, Norfolk

Sunday, 17 June 2018

6 people met on a sunny day with very little wind to see the summer visitors and residents at our local reserve RSPB Saltholme. In between the talking and discussing the local bird scene, the children and grandchildren, we had good views of the birds that are typical of Saltholme in the summer. Common tern were numerous and noisy. Sandmartins were still going in and out of their bank. A great crested grebe family were taking it easy in the sun on the main lake. Another great crested grebe adult was taking it easy at Paddy's Pool with its striped baby nestled onto its back. Avocets, little ringed plover and beautiful summer plumage godwit are all memories to treasure. More...

Curlew standing on weed, County Cork, Ireland

Sunday, 17 September 2017

Five of us met in the car park on the Tees Marshes wondering if it was going to rain or become sunny. While we were waiting to see if anyone else arrived, a female marsh harrier drifted across the fields. Joan suggested that we walked quickly down to the sea wall just to check what was there and then went to Seaton Snook as they had seen huge numbers of waders there earlier in the week. So we set off across the golf course and realised that a few bushes on the edge of the golf course had a number of small birds - and a bird watcher with his binoculars trained on one bush. Closer inspection revealed a whinchat, which was a good start. Sadly not all five of us saw it. More...
