OLD MOOR TRIP REPORT

OLD MOOR TRIP REPORT
Peter Reynolds

Sunday, 13 May 2018

Old Moor is a flat reserve, with cafe and toilets, and there are seven hides and scrapes, reedbeds and meadow areas.
Some of the group set of to investigate the hides, whilst others felt a visit to the cafe was needed.

First on the list for bird sightings were Swifts, who were flying around the Visitor centre. Having been told that three pairs of Bittern on Reedbed hide were sitting on their nest, and that they were being protected from visitors getting to close, we headed off to Field pool west hide, Black headed gulls were many and as usual very noisy, Cormorant were enjoying the sun, Little grebe, Heron, canada geese, oyster catchers, and a great crested grebe was spotted, coming out of the hide and into the sun Butterfly's were abundant, fluttering here and there, including a beautiful bright yellow Brimstone.

Wader scrape hide, Wath Ings hide, Field pool hide, were all visited with some great views of many birds, and some visited again on the return. Some members of the group visited Bittern hide, and were very pleased to have had clear views of the Bitterns, flying over the reeds.
The time to leave was soon upon us, with the heady scent of Hawthorn flower in our noses, and the knowledge that we had all enjoyed a great day out birding with friends, we settled down for a pleasant trip back home.

34 people booked to come and unfortunately we had 9 cancellations, which is the largest ever. So finally only 25 of us enjoyed the day. We hope all the people who cancelled through ill health have recovered.
