Short-eared owl sitting on the ground

January Birds in the Eastbourne area

The new year got off to a flying start with four Dartford warblers in the gorse above Plantation Wood, east of Beachy Head. The following day a pair of Egyptian geese were seen on Decoy Pond in Hampden Park, while the adjacent woodland hosted a firecrest later in the month.

The most notable birds seen offshore were little auk and black throated diver. Inland water featured a short eared owl (pictured) around Shinewater, and a bittern and three little gulls at West Rise Marsh.

Pevensey Levels held short eared owls and a ring-tailed hen harrier, while a drake scaup was seen on the meanders of the Cuckmere River.
