Reserve Visit: Rye Harbour Beach Reserve

Male wigeon swimming

Saturday, 1 October 2016

The weather forecast for the day was rain, followed by rain and for good measure a bit more rain. Fortunately for the birding group that was not altogether the case, thankfully, and the weather was bright, sunny and wind free. I understand that when the rain did come the group were busy having their lunch so repaired to the nearest hide.

Sadly on this occasion I was not able to join the merry band of birdwatchers but am delighted that they all had a rewarding and enjoyable day.

Neil Greenaway and Sedley Underdown were the Bird Guides and Neil compiled the following list of birds seen at the reserve.

Spoonbill, wheatear, hobby, redshank, black tailed godwit, oystercatcher, grey and ringed plover, turnstone, sanderling, curlew, snipe, lapwing, knot, mallard, teal, wigeon (pictured), gadwall, shelduck, pochard, tufted duck, brent goose, greylag geese, mute swan, great crested and little grebes, moorhen, coot, heron, little egret, black headed, herring, lesser black backed and great black backed gulls, sandwich tern, swallow, house martin, green woodpecker, wood pigeon, collared dove, kingfisher, crow, jackdaw, magpie, pied wagtail, linnet, goldfinch, meadow pipit, skylark, stonechat, house sparrow, starling, wren, robin, dunnock, blackbird, chiffchaff, blackcap, chaffinch, kestrel, marsh harrier, sparrowhawk, cormorant and feral pigeon.
