Bird Race

Sunday, 27 January 2013

We were pleased to welcome new members, guests and "regulars" to our second Treasure Hunt on a cold, windy day with heavy showers - not the best for birding. We formed into six cars and set off at 9am from Charlotte Square. Most teams visited Musselburgh, Figgate Pond & Duddingston with forays to Aberlady and the coast, Blackford Hill, Botanic Gardens and Cramond. However, there was a mileage penalty so each extra mile had to be productive. Additionally penalties were gathered for each minute over the 4pm deadline. The winning team with a magnificent 78 species in 66 miles was Peter Keightley, Per Smiseth and Ally Phillimore. Winnie, Ann & Margaret gathered the most point by dint of only 25 miles travelled & spotting 58 species. Rosie, Helen & Rashmi had the most bonus birds, winning on a tie break with a Stonechat, & garnered 62 species in 43 miles. Raptors seen were a Kestrel at Musselburgh, Peregrines at Musselburgh & Duddingston, Buzzard & a Sparrowhawk. Other good spots were Snipe, Purple Sandpiper, a Brent Goose & a Kingfisher at Musselburgh pond. The Thrush family, currently the subject of a BTO survey, was well represented with all species, except Waxwing seen during the day. Divers were at a premium, probably due to the choppy sea, but Barbara Rast, Maggie Gilvray, Den & Helen Mathers managed to see a Great Northern Diver off Musselburgh. We met back at the Wine Bar to warm up and discuss our very enjoyable day.
