Pressmennan and Dunbar Harbour
Glaucous gull - Steuart Ferguson

Saturday, 8 April 2017

A bright sunny morning welcomed us to Pressmennan Lake. Right from the start the wildlife was displaying, some of the group saw boxing Hares at the access track and for others there was a sighting of some Red Legged Partridges. The visit turned out to be well timed as the foliage in the trees was only starting to sprout, another week or two and the birds would be well hidden by the leaves.

The walk started along the track above the lake and was very productive with good numbers of small birds. There were lots of Chiffchaff to be seen and heard, Goldcrests, Treecreepers, all in larger numbers than many of us were used to seeing plus Nuthatch and various finches and tits. Lunch was at the dam and here birds such as Little Grebe, Goldeneye and Grey Wagtail were added to the day's list plus superb views of Peacock Butterflies. The gorse at the east end had Yellowhammers, very well camouflaged in the bright yellow flowers, a Buzzard flew overhead and Willow Warblers were heard but there was no sign of the Redstarts which we had been hoping for. The return was along the waterside path where we added Song Thrush and Bullfinch to the days tally.

Afterwards some of us headed down to Dunbar Harbour hoping to add the Glaucous Gull to our day's list. Initially there was no sign of it so some time was taken to view the various sea birds around the harbour. As we headed back to the cars having all but given up on the gull there it was, standing on the roof of one of the fishing boats only 25 feet away. I'm still not sure how it managed to get back in without any of us seeing it as we had been giving the harbour and particularly the boats a very thorough scan. But that's the way of birdwatching!
