14 hardy souls gathered at the car park in Blackness. The weather was bright, cold and breezy. The tide was receding and once we had passed the castle and walked down to the East bay, there was plenty of birds feeding on the rocks, mud and sand banks. On a dreich day six of us gathered to explore the Doune Ponds habitat. Lacking initial optimism we were pleasantly surprised by the number of bird species seen including a Nuthatch and six Bullfinches. Contrary to the weather forecast the rain only started when we reached the hides and was lighter than predicted. Mallards were in abundance with Moorhens and a Heron spotted. More...

Despite the awful weather forecast nine of us negotiated miles of road works & confusing signage to arrive at Baron's Haugh near Motherwell on time. A kestrel greeted us in the car park & the weather turned out to be better than expected though cloudy with occasional drizzle. On the way to the marsh hide revealed a sighting, by Bill, of Sarcoscypha coccinea; no not a rare migrant bird but the scarlet elf fungus growing on a decaying branch lying on the forest floor. The weather forecast for the weekend suggested that it would be cold with occasional wintry showers, and it certainly turned out that way on the Friday and Saturday! A total of 21 members made the trip, 4 of whom were in their own caravan(ette) accommodation. Of the many waymarked paths within this country park, we chose the White Bridge Trail along the banks of the Avon gorge - but had to divert to the Green Bridge Trail owing to a previous landslide!
