Signs of Spring

On Sunday 12th April we returned back to RSPB Fowlmere where we met with the warden. From the visitor centre we headed over to the Drewer Hide where Doug pointed out a little grebe on its nest hidden away in the reeds. From there we then walked around to the River Shep and on the way we heard a few singing chiffchaff and blackcap. In the river we spotted numerous brown trout hanging above the river bed and Doug explained how they manage the river so that it remains suitable for the trout. We then headed off along a secret trail to the watercress beds and we were lucky enough to spot a female grass snake basking on the bank which quickly slithered off. We had a great morning and we learnt about some of the different habitat management methods that are used and we saw lots of signs of spring along the way. More...

Many years ago farms were regarded as havens for wildlife but as farming methods changed then so did the farming landscape. Machinery became bigger which meant that most of the hedgerows and small woods were removed and the need to turn as much land as possible into arable increased. More...
