West in Search of ( White-billed) Divers

Oystercatcher wading in shallow water

Saturday, 30 March 2013

Many more were on the sea in Gruinard Bay along with a red-throated diver, guillemots, and razorbills. There were about 90 barnacle geese feeding in a field nearby and three otters along the shoreline. At Gruinard beach a greenshank was feeding and there were slavonian grebe and common scoter with more great northern divers. After a brief look at Loch Ewe we went to the hide at Poolewe for lunch and then to Gairloch and added red-breasted merganser, eider, black-throated diver, heron, oystercatcher, curlew, lapwing and redshank to the list. Our last stop of the day was at Kinlochewe where long-tailed tit brought the final total to 54 species. Sadly we didn't find a white-billed diver so better luck next time.
