May and June News 2017

May and June News 2017

Although we finished our indoor meetings season on 5 May with the AGM and a talk by Martin Johnson about his trip to Antarctica, the outdoor meetings continued throughout May and June, with coach trips to RSPB Minsmere and RSPB Strumpshaw Fen (see the trip reports) as well as 'own transport' spring walks at Broom Gravel Pits, Oughtonhead and Wicken Fen. In addition we had a guided tour of John Dingemans' farm in Rushden Southern Green and, to complete the 2016-2017 season, our now traditional half day visit to RSPB Lakenheath Fen, Weeting Heath (for stone curlews) and Mayday Farm (for nightjars). Highlights included little ringed plover and greenshank at Broom, little owl and barn owl at Southern Green Farm, excellent views of hunting hobbies at Wicken Fen and, thankfully, stone curlew and nightjar at Weeting Heath and Mayday Farm respectively. In addition to these field trips we ran stalls at the Letchworth Festival and at Shefford Fete. In fact we had a very busy two months!
