About us

Welcome to the RSPB Loughborough Local group. The group's aim is to engage people in the work of the RSPB and nature conservation in general. We want to educate, inform and entertain people in the environment particularly from a birding aspect. The group wishes to support the RSPB both financially and promotionally to preserve bird life in the local environment. To this end we organise a number of activities.

Our field trips by coach are relaxed and carefully planned to give people a wide range of bird watching experiences and to allow them to decide what sort of a day they want ?either searching out a rare bird or simply enjoying a quiet walk in the countryside. We arrive at our destination at about 10.30 am and then you are free to do your own thing. We do not stay together as a complete group but help and advice is available from your fellow birders as you meet them around the reserve.
Our indoor meetings are also held at Loughborough University in a modern tiered lecture theatre with safe free parking outside. There is a sound system (with hearing loop) and wheelchair access. The presentations are accompanied by slides or, more often these days, by a digital projector. We pay for the best speakers and carefully choose subjects that make for a balanced programme throughout the year. As you would expect we have a bias towards 'birdy' subjects but other forms of wildlife are often covered too. We promise you a warm welcome but we won't overwhelm you!
Using grants from various national and local charities and businesses we run a nest box project with CCTV equipped nest boxes in various schools, residential homes and a children's hospice. In 2007 13 of the 16 boxes had nests in them.
