March 2018 - Wildlife Sightings

Redesmere 30/03/2018 9.00am to 10.30am
Tufted duck, mallard, coot (nest in front of car park), moorhen, Canada geese in good numbers.
Pair of mute swans, three oyster catchers resting on boat house pier.
Numbers of carrion crow and pheasant on fields.
Buzzard overhead, robin, blackbird, chaffinch, wood pigeon and wren.
Blue, great and long tailed tit in woods chiffchaff heard in the woods before the boat house.
Good view of nuthatch in branches.

29 March -Styal
Small fall of Chiffchaff - at least four singing in Southern Wood and good views obtained.
Numbers of goosander are increasing with three males and at least six females present.
Nuthatch now feeding young in regular nest on loop path.
Nest building at Dipper site.

A pair of brambling in the garden on Gawsworth Road, stayed around feeding for a few hours.

Warbler in low scrub by water's edge, probably chiff chaff. Unfortunately did not call.

Three Little Egrets on Paddlers' Pool this afternoon, but gone now. Most yet!

18 March at 6.30am for couple of hours - Astbury Mere
Five scaup still also five hawfinch and four brambling (three on feeding station). Also 43 golden plover flew over (a site first).

Five scaup this afternoon along with female stonechat, two hawfinch and four brambling on feeders.

Seven redwing, four snipe, dipper, lapwing, three meadow pipit, pair mandarin duck.

13 March - Astbury Mere am
Eight hawfinch , eleven brambling, male overwintering blackcap and male reed bunting. We now have a feeding station up in the conservation area entered from left hand side of car park.

Taking a walk down Clay Lane, Handforth found a mixed finch flock - approx 10 chaffinch, 10+ goldfinch and two bramblings.

04 March - High Lane
At 6pm a tawny owl flew over the A6 in High Lane.

Two dunlin have appeared at Astbury - the first record for 25 yrs. Also smew still this morning and two hawfinch, four brambling, pair of shoveler, female goldeneye and 28 redwing feeding on grass in front of visitors' centre.

03 March - Blakelow
We had three fieldfare in the garden yesterday. There was also a lone redpoll yesterday evening behaving strangely by burrowing itself into the soft snow on our decking rail. It was there all night, but
unfortunately I found it dead on the ground below this morning. I can only assume it was trying to roost in the snow but was too cold to survive the night.

03 March - St Peters Rd Congleton.
The garden is producing some different birds for me at the moment. Today a pair of siskins were feeding on the lawn. Yesterday I saw a fieldfare jumping up to take berries off a bush and a treecreeper was on the alder in the back garden!

02 March 2018. Hurdsfield reservoirs 9 am
Two snipe, one kingfisher and heron, black headed gulls, coot, moorhen, mallard, tufted duck, Canada flock (and goosander yesterday).
Unusual amount of birds sheltering from the wind and snow .
