April Bird of the Month - Black Redstart

April Bird of the Month - Black Redstart

The black redstart readily inhabits towns, industrial sites and cliff faces, where its strange song of stone-shaking trills and rattles carries some distance.

In Britain it is a rare migratory breeding species and local winter and passage migrant. A grassy nest is built in holes or ledges in buildings or cavities in cliffs or rock falls. In Kent, the black redstart can generally be found at Dungeness by the power station, on the towers at Reculver and on the rocks at Samphire Hoe.
