November Bird of the Month - Purple Sandpiper

Larger and plumper than a Dunlin, the Purple Sandpiper is grey above with thin white fringes on scapulars. The belly is white and the flanks are streaked with dark chevrons. The tail is long and projects beyond the wing tips and in flight it shows thin white wing bars. The bill is short, down-curved and pale-based and the short yellow-orange legs give the bird a distinct dumpy and shuffling appearance which aids identification.

The flight call is a nasal 'weet-wit' sometimes given by several birds as they take off together.

The best places to see this species in Kent are Hampton Pier, Hythe, Dover Harbour and Thanet
