Nightingale Walk at RSPB Northward Hill (Leader David Saunders)
Kestrel [Richard Hanman]

Thursday, 4 May 2017

The above walk was a great success, a fantastic opportunity to showcase the bird and indeed the reserve. It has to be said the weather could have been a little kinder, it being overcast and quite chilly. That said fortunately it didn't put off the stars of the show performing.

But it wasn't all about nightingales; there were whitethroats, lesser whitethroats in the scrub, still plenty more to see. Kestrels and buzzards, cuckoos calling and flying overhead, swallows were beginning to increase and one of the first swifts of the year seen, the very first one was in fact yesterday - for the record!

It was pleasing to see members of the Gravesend and Medway RSPB group attending as well as that stalwart campaigner, Gill Moore from friends of the North Kent Marshes.

Thanks are due to all the staff and volunteers who gave up their time on a cold evening to make the event a success - Will, Ruby, Liz and Rosemary from the RSPB, Adrian Olsen, Warren Mann, Dave and Sally Hale, Peter Beckenham, Trevor Hatton.
