A sunny but very windy day as seven hardy birders including three new people joined us for a walk around Cliffe Pools.

Starting at a view point at the car park 'tall' Adrian got a kingfisher in his scope sitting long enough for our first timers to see.

Little and great crested grebes, pochards, redshanks and lapwings were also in good numbers. Walking along the Conoco Trail to Cliffe Creek where we looked over the sea wall to see curlews, shellducks and on the other side of the Thames 60-odd avocets.

Further along the back track we saw linnets, goldfinches, a solitary green sandpiper which flew up from the ditch, kestrel and one of our first timers, Cathy, was first to see a marsh harrier. From the Black Barn Track looking into the radar pool we saw a greenshank, golden plover and black-tailed godwits 'flocked in' with more lapwing.

As the group left to go home Pete Saville and I added one more to the list, a jay, to make the total for the day 48 species seen.
